Organic gardening is an important method of gardening that the use of chemicals dispensed. Is on a large scale, organic food is technically a small amount of pesticides, but the regulations are extremely tight. For the average homeowner, you can only use organic methods in your garden, because you do not need to exist, the need for a large scale.

Cultivation of fruit and vegetables are important because they are better for you and for the country. The only thing you can do chemicals, increase yields and protect plants against threats, but it does not improve the quality of the plants themselves. The corresponding exchange is an important concept to remember in this world, so if you increase the yields of your crops, it will have an adverse effect in another region. Since the owners need to worry about always large quantities of grain, they go on a fully organic regiment stick.
Until recently in the history of organic gardening is the only method of gardening. There were no special chemicals to speed things up or to completely protect plants against pests and insects. During the industrialization of the world meant everything in the production and other important issues were ignored, inorganic gardening is becoming increasingly important. He stayed like that until recently, is when the health is a major problem in the face of a large number of epidemics has been growing, and organic gardening again with hopefully a better life for all.

Growing your own herbs is easy once you know how, and can add colour and scent to your garden or windowsill all year round. Ceri Thomas, editor of Which? Gardening gives advice on stockists and suppliers, and all you need to grow three of the most popular herbs basil, coriander and rosemary.

Many common kitchen herbs are now available from supermarkets as potted plants, but they can be tricky to keep going. However, the majority of these, such as basil, coriander and parsley, are actually a collection of seedlings crammed into the pot rather than a single established plant. You can use this to your advantage and it can be an easy, convenient way to get a lot of herb plants. Just separate the individual seedlings, and re-pot separately.

Growing from seed is the cheapest method for annual herbs. Cut parsley, coriander and chives to within 5cm of the base before re-potting, and separate the individual plantlets and re-pot each one in its own container. Take care when dividing coriander, parsley and basil, as they all resent having their roots disturbed. If basil has become leggy, you can re-plant it more deeply to encourage stronger growth.

How to grow basil

You can start sowing basil towards the end of March in a greenhouse or on a sunny windowsill. It’s very sensitive to cold and will blacken at the slightest hint of frost, so make sure your early sowings are protected. Once the young plants reach about 15cm tall, remove the shoot tip to encourage more leafy growth and a bushier plant. When the warmth of June arrives, you can sow another batch outside and move any indoor plants outside to the patio. Make a final sowing in August to give you fresh basil into autumn.
Alternatively, you can buy basil in posts from the supermarket or garden centre. Look for bushy plants with lots of side-shoots and no sign of flowering. You can then make more plants by taking cuttings.

Keep your basil in the sunniest spot that you can find – preferably a south-facing windowsill or patio, once there’s no risk of frost. Water sparingly and remove flower spikes – if these are allowed to mature, your plants will stop growing new leaves.
Pick individual leaves from the top of the plant and feed with a liquid fertiliser afterwards. Then leave it to grow again. If you find that you have a bumper crop at the end of summer, pick the lot and make it into pesto. It freezes really well if you leave out the parmesan, which can be added before use.

Recommended varieties of basil

Sweet basil, often sold as ‘Sweet Genovese’ has the classic basil taste. Greek basil is compact and bushy with tiny leaves, so there’s no need to chop them before cooking. ‘Green Ruffles’ has the classic basil flavour with a crinkly leaf texture, while ‘Thai basil’ is spicy and hot.

‘Cinnamon basil’ has a flavour rather like aniseed sweets, or for a fresh lemony tang try ‘Mrs Burns’ Lemon’. For ornamental use in window boxes or edging beds, try ‘Purple Ruffles’ for its crinkly purple leaves.

How to grow coriander

Coriander doesn’t like being moved, so it’s best sown where you want it to grow, either in the ground or in large pots. Sow in late spring or early summer, and in August sow some more in pots on the windowsill for a supply during autumn and winter. Well-drained soil in a sunny spot is essential for growing coriander, and if you’re growing it indoors on a windowsill, give it plenty of light and don’t over water.

Coriander is annoyingly quick to flower and set seed before it has produced much leaf, so it’s best to sow little and often. Watch out for fine, feathery leaves – a sure sign the plants are about to flower.

Keep picking mature leaves as and when you need them. Regular cropping should delay flowering, but once the plants do flower, allow them to set seed. The seed is ripe when it stops smelling unpleasant. Collect it and use in cooking, keeping some to sow for another crop.

Recommended varieties of coriander

If you want the leaves choose ‘Cilantro’ and ‘Leisure’, which are slow to form seeds. If it’s seed you’re after, go for Moroccan coriander.

How to grow rosemary

Rosemary is widely available as established plants in garden centres for planting in spring. For more plants, take cuttings from young shoots in spring or summer. Rosemary is slightly tender and needs a sunny, sheltered position in well-drained soil; it does well in chalky soils. If you are growing it in a container, add some grit to the compost to aid drainage and don’t over water. After flowering in March, trim into shape and feed.

You can pick leaves from this evergreen all year round. It’s a good idea to dry some leaves at the end of summer if you want to use lots of rosemary over the winter, or add a sprig to olive oil for salad dressings.

Recommended varieties of rosemary

The Common rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is the hardiest form and most used in cooking. ‘Miss Jessopp’s Upright’ is a more vigorous and upright variety and makes a good focal point in a herb bed.

The Prostratus Group are low-growing forms ideal for the top of a wall or rock garden. Corsican rosemary has a more pungent scent.

Pruning trees & shrubs, just like the application of fertilizer and pesticide to lawns, is a routine part of the general horticultural care provided by commercial and residential horticultural care companies in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco. Here are some tips on the proper ways to prune trees & shrubs.

Tree pruning usually consists of crown thinning, crown raising or crown reduction.

Crown thinning is the selective removal of branches throughout the crown of young trees, thereby promoting better health with improved air movement and light penetration. It also improves the tree’s form. It should not be overdone on mature trees, though.

Crown raising is the removal of lower branches on either developing or mature trees. This is usually done to create more clearance for streets, sidewalks or lawns.

Crown reduction is the removal of larger branches from the top of a tree, reducing its height. It should be done differently from topping, with no stubs left. This can be achieved by removing branches immediately above lateral branches. Even then, this the least desirable way of pruning trees and should be resorted to only with absolute necessity.

Evergreens or conifers such as spruces, firs, pines, arborvitae, junipers, yews and hemlocks do not require much pruning but have specific pruning needs depending on their particular growth patterns.

Spruces, firs and Douglas-firs do not grow continuously, but growth begins in spring. Late winter pruning would be best for them, just before new growth begins. They have lateral buds that sprout when terminal buds are removed, though, so that pruning at any time is possible. Even minimal pruning at spring will not be harmful.

Pines very seldom need pruning, except when more dense growth is desired. In such cases, newly expanded candles can be pruned back by removing up to two-thirds. Do not, however, remove more than the growth of the current year. Since pine trees grow tips only in spring and then stop growing, the new candles should be pruned before they mature. Remember that pine trees do not have any lateral buds and that removing their terminal buds will eliminate new points for growth, leaving dead stubs.

Arborvitae, junipers, yews and hemlocks, on the other hand, grow continuously and can be pruned at any time until midsummer. They can withstand heavy shearing but this is rarely done since their natural forms are often more desirable. Pruning is done only if there are growth defects that need to be corrected.

Hedges should be pruned upon planting and should also be pruned often afterwards. Pruning should be done in such a way that the hedges are kept wide at the base and narrower at the top. This prevents legginess and allows all parts of the hedge to receive enough sunlight. Pruning should be done at least twice a year, preferably in spring and in the middle of summer. This will keep the hedges dense. Also prune whenever the hedge grows to six to eight inches over its desired height, cutting it back to within two inches of the previous pruning.

To renew older shrubs or overgrown shrubs, prune a third of the oldest and thickest stems down to the ground. New stems will then be encouraged to grow from the roots. Do this until there are no overgrown trunks left, but do not over-prune.

It is good to know the proper ways of pruning but in the end, it is still best to leave the pruning of trees & shrubs to horticultural experts in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco. They have the necessary professional equipment to do it and will know exactly what to do.

Raising your own vegetable garden helps stretch your grocery budget. Not only is it economical, but homegrown produce is quite nutritious, especially if you fertilize the soil before you plant. It’s pretty easy to visit your local lawn and garden store and pick up a few bags of commercial fertilizer. But to enrich your garden soil without harmful chemicals and save money at the same time, it’s better to make and use your own fertilizer.

Homemade Fertilizer Made With Weeds

Although we see them as nuisances in our yards and gardens, weeds can be quite beneficial. They can make an easy-to-use homemade fertilizer for your vegetable garden. The greater the variety of weeds you use, the more nutrients your fertilizer will contain. Most any kind of weeds can be used such as dandelions, nettles and wild garlic.

To make this homemade fertilizer, simply gather together a bunch of different types of weeds. Chop them up roughly with a pair of yard clippers and place them in a five-gallon bucket. You’ll need about a pound of weeds per batch. Add eight cups of tap water to the chopped weeds and cover the bucket. Set it in a warm, sunny spot outside that is away from your house. As the weeds ferment, they will become rather smelly.

Allow the homemade weed fertilizer to ferment in the sun for two to four weeks, stirring the mixture weekly. Don’t get the solution on your skin or clothing, because it will stain.

Finally, to use this fertilizer on your garden, mix together 1 part of the weed solution and 10 parts water. Pour it onto the roots of your vegetable plants and then water the soil with plain tap water to help send the homemade fertilizer down to the roots.

When you need to make more weed solution, simply replace the old weeds with a fresh batch. Add more water and allow the solution to ferment as you did previously.

Homemade Organic Fertilizer

Another way you can enrich your garden soil and save money is to make a homemade organic fertilizer. You’ll need to visit your local feed and grain store, as well as a garden supply store to buy the necessary supplies, including:

1. Seed Meal

2. Finely- Ground Agricultural Lime

3. Gypsum

4. Dolomitic lime

5. Bone meal or rock phosphate

6. Kelp meal

If you can’t find bone meal or kelp meal at the local store, you can buy small bags of both through various Web sites.

To make this organic fertilizer, mix together 4 parts seed meal, 1/4 part agricultural lime, 1/4 part gypsum, 1/2 part dolomitic lime, 1 part bone meal or rock phosphate and 1/2 part kelp meal in a five-gallon bucket.

To use this fertilizer on your garden, spread it over the soil in the spring before you plant. Then, apply small amounts to your growing vegetable plants every three to four weeks.
